As a result we started experimenting with some clients, with their consent, on alternative methods of trance inductions.  Because I have an interest in stage hypnosis, I could see some clients could be put into hypnosis very rapidly. Although these methods may not have an obvious application in a clinical setting, the fact that an autistic subject could be put into hypnosis in a matter of seconds, and that some subjects resisted the idea (consciously or otherwise) fascinated me.

As a result my staff and I started looking at alternative methods of induction.  These are now routinely used at Vancouver Hypnotherapy with clients that find it a difficult to achieve trance. These methods can be as diverse as the use of massage, yoga, physical manipulation or dance. We’ve even used drumming, and computer games – which also induce trance. The results have been nothing short of incredible.

The reality is, trance is trance.  It doesn’t really matter how it is achieved.  In the interests of not turning our busy hypnotherapy practice into a zoo, we do not use dance often. We use environment appropriate methods. But, at this stage we have virtually no clients that cannot achieve trance. Our methods are effective, and trance is achieved, and the client becomes receptive to suggestion.  And that’s the point.

It doesn’t really matter how you get the subject to that point, as long as you do. Once a client is receptive to suggestion, therapy can really begin.

Some unusual examples of possible trance inductions are:

Drumming
Practicing repetitive musical pieces for a musician
Bursting the bubbles in bubble wrap
Playing some computer games (complex or simple like Tetris)
Dancing for long periods
Yin Yoga
Meditation
Treadmills
Long walks (walking meditation, Australian Aboriginal psychic voyaging)
Rocking
Prayer
Holding a baby or small mammal

All of these are actions during which the mind can enter an altered state. With the right training this type of situation can be moved into a trance induction opportunity. Obviously this should only ever happen with the consent of the subject, however you can probably see how there are many situations in which people laterally slip into trance without realising it. In most cases this trance state goes unused.

In the world of Technical Hypnotherapy we learn that as a hypnotist our art goes back a little further than perhaps you thought. The hypnotist carries a flame that was ignited over a hundred thousand years ago in the Afar Valley in northern Kenya, or on the beaches of New Zealand, or in the endless walking of the aboriginals of Australia.

All these peoples have a tradition of the use of trance. The Nuer in South Sudan, the peoples of the Himalayas and the Norse of Northern Europe. The Asiatic nations and the inhabitants of the Amazon, all have a heritage of the use of trance and of hypnosis, though it is known by other names.

Have you noticed how comforting it is to sit on a beach and stare into the flames of a fire at dusk? Think of it now. Not of the people, or the holiday, just the moment. It feels good, doesn’t it? There are reasons for that.

These are skills that are old.  Very old.  There’s nothing new about hypnosis.

Let’s start with the aboriginal peoples of Australia. Their talk of dreamtime, going ‘walk about’ (a form of walking meditative state) and what seem to amount to references to other dimensions certainly appear to reach into the realm of subconscious thought and vision.

And then there’s the various African peoples that have shamanistic practices, drumming and the use of extended periods of dance, that often result in entire villages going into a lengthy trance state. The extensive use of suggestion in some quasi magical practices are unquestionably a form of hypnosis.

Indian practices loosely described as yoga, tantra and others are clearly related to trance induction. Modern versions of this have refined the use of trance further and introduced it to millions far beyond the influence of some of those yogic roots.

And of course, there’s the chanting of the First Nations of people of North America. These vocal chants are merely another form of trance induction (as are responses in many modern churches and temples).

Our history as a species is peppered with examples of the use of our subconscious abilities. In some cases these are affected by the use of nutrients, hallucinogens and narcotics, such as Ayahuaska in the Amazon, but one way or another what we can be sure of is that this larger cranium, and all that thinking, and these funny little journeys into the subconscious – and our astonishing leap ahead of other more primitive hominids – are indivisibly entwined.

As hypnotists it’s our job to help our subject achieve trance and then use it in a positive manner to effect the clients life, and improve their condition.

There are some unusual aspects to how we deal with trance.  We are massively susceptible to suggestion when in trance.  The idea that the sensual model spread across the bonnet of the sportscar in a magazine could put us into trance seems almost silly. However, there’s no doubt that when the mind latches on to some issues – mostly primal (sexual, to do with identity, parenting or safety) – we do employ a slightly different set of thought processing tools. Other people can find that same image disturbing, or repulsive. Either way it is creating a reaction that is excessive – after all it’s just a bunch of pixels. No different really from a picture of a tree. It is almost as if some form of trance is being induced when we open our mind to some forms of stimulus. This will not come as a surprise to some readers.

If you use your imagination you can probably think of situations in which a stimulus has come into play, and resulted in your surprisingly receptive response.
